The Two Liner Invitational
Two friends and I have had this tradition for years now—we often shared music as a matter of course—and the mix tapes, ripped CD’s and enthusiastic voicemails stacked up over time– but at some point after the advent of email we began reaching out from LA and NYC and San Francisco to share two lines of a song that perfectly described our day, our mood, or the vibe around us.
It’s a succinct way of being in touch, and it amused us to try to stump one another, by not including the song name or artist. Inevitably, we’d end up pulling that music from our own collection, just to hear it all the way through. What I‘ve loved about two-lining is the chronicle of our lives and the music we were affected by. For example, here’s one from back in 2000:
“Its a curse like a black thumb.
Everything I touch runs wild with the pressure of it.
or becomes a pile of dust, then the wind gets it.
Everything I touch runs wild.
I never meant to cause you anything but happiness.”
Obviously a downer day, right? No prob. You get to be cheesy, grumpy, goofy, showtune-y, existential, or what have you. Here’s one from June 2008 with a higher YUM factor.
“Let’s do it in the mornin’, sweet breeze in the summertime.
Feeling your sweet face all laid up next to mine.”
*******************************************
How’d you do? Did you correctly identify the downer tune as “Black Thumb” by Lori Carson from the “Niagra, Niagra” movie soundtrack? How about the one from June? See the end of this post for the answer.
You try it! Post your two-liner of a song that describes your mood, your day, your outlook, or your life. Obviously, a few more than two lines is permissible, but two perfect lines is ideal. Make sure to send the link to your posting around to your pals, and come back to see what kind of day we’re having around here.
The two liner from June 08 is The Staple Singers, “Let’s Do It Again.”
Mine for today goes like this—dedicated to my original Two-Liners Amy and Sioux, of course:
“All romantics meet the same fate someday,
Cynical and drunk and boring someone in some dark café.
You laugh, he said–you think you’re immune,
Go look at your eyes, they’re full of Moon.”

Won’t you come over and check up on it?
I’ma let you work up on it
Gotta find me a future move out of my way
I want it all I want it all I want it all and I want it now
Ooh, let’s see now–Beyonce, right? Check Up On It.

an alley creeper, light on his feet.
Thanks, pals.

This is a brilliant blog idea. I’d like to see it as a regular feature here in Risk-land.

In spite of all we know
How little we know
In spite of all we see
How little we see
I only know, you and me
Together forever
“In case you can’t tell, I’m feeling really in love. Almost 24 yrs. and really in love. If I would have added the line I really wanted to, it would have given it [title] away.”
- Wishing all of you the blessing I so value -
Hey, you!
Come out here on the floor.
Let’s rock some more.
Come out here on the floor,
Honey, let’s rock some more, yeah!
Humidity is rising…Baramotor is getting low. According to our sources…the street’s the place to go!
Wow, only kristy stumped me–anybody care to tell me what her song is?
Hints!
It’s a show tune.
This show is relatively new–since 2000–and world premiered in SF
Queer people know this playwright but not for his musical
I might be stumping you, but I am TERRIBLE at this game. Even the Beyonce stumped me, and I LOVE that song . . .
ooo kristy “Caroline or change” — that’s some esoteric musical theater quoting–I only got it with Google
out of my own little head, I only got Teresa’s — “It’s raining men” — ah yeah baby…
I feel like I should know Lance’s right away…
Well done, Kat! But esoteric? Dawnie said showtunes were fair game, and who could be more queerly appropriate to this blog than Tony Kushner?
Ah well, Dawn, I hope you are pleased with the energy this post has generated. Ain’t blogging grand?
